Job Title: L3 Software Engineer Company: Merit Finder Job Type: Full time Workplace Type: On site Location: San Jose, California, United States Base Salary: 120,000 per year Job Description: Merit Finder is seeking an experienced L3 Software Engineer to join our on-site engineering team in San Jose, California. In this role, you will design, develop, test, and maintain software systems that support our product and business objectives. You will work in a collaborative environment with engineers and cross-functional partners to deliver reliable, scalable solutions, while contributing to system improvements through sound engineering judgment and strong technical execution. As an L3 engineer, you are expected to take ownership of complex tasks, solve difficult technical problems, and provide technical guidance to support team success. You will translate requirements into maintainable code, build robust features using Python, and apply statistical reasoning to help improve data quality, performance, and decision-making across our platforms. Key Responsibilities: 1. Software Development and Engineering - Design and implement software components and services using Python. - Write clean, maintainable code and follow established engineering best practices. - Build and integrate features across the application stack, ensuring correctness and reliability. - Develop and maintain APIs, background jobs, and other supporting system components. - Participate in system design discussions and contribute to technical architecture decisions. 2. Statistical and Data-Driven Problem Solving - Apply statistical concepts and methods to analyze data, identify trends, and support product outcomes. - Use statistical reasoning to validate assumptions, improve model inputs/outputs (when applicable), and ensure data integrity. - Assist with designing experiments or analyses to evaluate feature performance and effectiveness. - Partner with stakeholders to define metrics and interpret results accurately. 3. Testing, Quality, and Reliability - Create and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure software quality. - Investigate production issues, identify root causes, and implement preventive improvements. - Monitor system health and performance, and contribute to reliability and scalability enhancements. - Ensure that code changes are thoroughly reviewed and aligned with team standards. 4. Collaboration and Technical Leadership - Collaborate closely with product, design, data, and engineering teams to deliver high-impact functionality. - Provide guidance and mentorship to other engineers, sharing best practices and technical insights. - Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation, and development processes. - Maintain clear communication with stakeholders regarding progress, risks, and solutions. 5. Ownership and Continuous Improvement - Take ownership of assigned initiatives from concept through delivery. - Continuously improve system performance, code quality, and maintainability. - Recommend improvements to tooling, workflows, and engineering standards based on observed needs. Required Skills and Qualifications: - Strong statistical knowledge and the ability to apply statistical reasoning to real-world engineering and data problems. - Proficiency in Python (Python should be a primary programming language used in this role). - Solid software engineering fundamentals, including debugging, testing, and performance-minded development. - Experience building and maintaining production-quality applications and services. - Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex technical tasks while collaborating effectively with others. Preferred Qualifications (Optional, if applicable): - Experience working with data pipelines, analytics, or measurement-focused systems. - Familiarity with software engineering practices such as continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD). - Experience with system monitoring, incident response, and operational support for production systems. Workplace Details: - This is a full-time, on-site role based in San Jose, California, United States. - You will work with the team onsite to support day-to-day collaboration and execution.
